Stephen Hanks, who works for the Atlanta-based consulting firm MACTEC, was in charge of an ocean-front property containing a bulk fuel storage terminal. That terminal continued to create challenges caused by a spill that happened about 10 years ago. MACTEC engineers had dug a recovery trench to keep contaminants from leeching into the nearby natural water source. However, because of the site’s close proximity to a coral reef, this solution proved untenable in the long term. The coral would re-grow in the trench.

The Canadian railway industry has been forced to downsize operations in recent times due to less expensive methods of moving freight to the far North. The result has been the closing of many remote train depots that once serviced the mining and hydro-power industries. After decades of constant activity, many of these depots contaminated the local groundwater. To maintain the pristine wilderness, the railways sought a solution to clean the contaminated groundwater and approached Abanaki Corporation for an environmentally responsible solution.

Can I use my skimmer outside?
Yes, most of our skimmers are made to be used inside or outside. There are some belt materials that are UV sensitive, but most of the skimmers are capable of handling outdoor weather.
I work for a wastewater treatment plant that handles backflow from fracking operations. The wastewater typically has oil in it that needs to be removed. What type of skimmer and belt material would be ideal for a large wastewater sump?
The Model 8 Oil Grabber is ideal for large wastewater applications because it will be able to pull oil from the entire tank at rates of up to 32 gallons per hour. The XP Poly belt is a perfect fit for this application because it is very chemical resistant and will not harden over time.
