When it comes to selecting the right belt for oil skimming applications, a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. The performance and longevity of your equipment depend on carefully evaluating your specific needs and operating conditions. Below, we address three essential questions to help you determine the best belt for your application.

Check out our Oil Skimming Guide to learn more.

1. What Kind of Oil Are You Trying to Skim?

The type of oil you’re dealing with significantly impacts the choice of your belt material. Different oils—such as tramp oil, fuel oil, or gear oil—have varying viscosities and characteristics that influence the belt’s effectiveness.

Tramp Oil: This lightweight oil often floats on water and is best addressed with belts that have high water-shedding properties.

Fuel Oil: A belt that resists chemical absorption and handles low-viscosity fluids effectively is key for this application.

Gear Oil: Heavier, more viscous oils require a durable and robust belt with strong adhesion properties.

Choosing the right material ensures that your skimming process is efficient and minimizes downtime. Using a belt tailored to the specific oil type also prevents unnecessary wear and tear, extending the lifespan of your equipment.

2. Are There Any Cleaners or Chemicals Involved?

The pH levels and chemical composition of your solution are critical factors to consider. If cleaners or harsh chemicals are present in the tank or pit, you’ll need to invest in belts and units designed to withstand these conditions.

Stainless Steel Units: Ideal for environments where chemical resistance is paramount. Stainless steel prevents corrosion and maintains the integrity of the equipment over time.

Special Poly Belts: If your operation involves mild chemicals or moderate pH variations, poly belts engineered for durability can provide a cost-effective solution.

Understanding the chemical profile of your environment helps you choose a belt that will perform reliably without premature wear or damage. Neglecting this factor can lead to frequent equipment failures, increasing maintenance costs and reducing overall productivity.

3. What Is the Temperature of the Water or Solution?

Temperature can have a significant impact on belt performance and longevity. High temperatures can cause certain materials to warp or degrade, while low temperatures may affect the belt’s flexibility.

High-Temperature Environments: Consider belts made from materials designed to resist heat without losing their structural integrity.

Low-Temperature Conditions: Opt for belts with flexibility and elasticity to maintain smooth operation.

Knowing the temperature range of your application helps ensure your belt functions consistently under varying conditions. Temperature extremes can compromise the material properties of the belt, leading to inefficiencies or breakdowns during operation.

Additional Considerations for Belt Selection

There is a great deal of variance in applications where belt skimmers are present. Figuring out the best belt material for your skimmer will depend on several factors. While belts generally pick up oil in the same fashion, the big difference lies in selecting a material that offers the longest operating life.

The two primary factors that influence your belt choice are the combination of temperature and pH levels. These factors typically dictate whether you should use a steel, elastomer, or polymer belt:

Steel Belts: While durable, steel belts are not ideal when rust inhibitors are present in your application, as these can coat the belt and reduce the pick-up rate.

Elastomer and Polymer Belts: These options are often better suited for environments with specific pH levels or chemical exposure, providing durability and effectiveness in such conditions.

When in doubt, it is best to consult with a representative and provide details about your application to determine the most suitable material for your belt skimmer.

Other Factors to Consider

While the three questions above provide a strong starting point, there are additional factors to keep in mind when choosing a belt for your oil skimming system:

Belt Width and Length: Ensure the belt dimensions are compatible with your skimmer to optimize efficiency.

Installation and Maintenance: Some belt materials may require specific handling or periodic checks to ensure optimal performance.

Environmental Considerations: If your operation is outdoors or in a particularly harsh environment, ensure the belt is designed to handle exposure to UV rays, rain, or other environmental factors.

Expert Advise

Answering these questions provides a solid foundation for determining the best belt for your oil skimming needs. By understanding the type of oil you’re skimming, the chemical environment, and the temperature conditions, you can select a belt that maximizes efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness.

When rust inhibitors are present, avoid steel belts to maintain optimal pick-up rates. Consulting with a professional can help tailor your equipment to your specific application, ensuring your skimming system operates at peak performance.

When it comes to choosing an oil skimmer, the adage “you get what you pay for” often rings true. A common misconception is that purchasing a smaller skimmer based on gallons-per-hour skimming capacity can save money on larger oil removal tasks. However, this approach can lead to ineffective oil skimming and long-term inefficiencies that outweigh the initial savings.

Check out our Oil Skimming Guide to learn more.

Why Under-sizing Your Skimmer is a Mistake

Area Matters More Than VolumeOil skimmers should be selected based on the size of the area to be skimmed, not solely on the amount of oil to be removed. A smaller or mini unit may struggle to cover a large surface area effectively, leaving behind oil and requiring more time and effort to achieve the desired results. Large surface areas often require industrial-sized skimmers to ensure comprehensive coverage and efficiency. Failing to account for area size can result in frequent maintenance interruptions and reduced overall productivity.

Capacity RecommendationsAn oil skimmer should have the capacity to remove at least twice the amount of oil required by the application. This ensures the skimmer can handle unexpected conditions and maintain performance over time. By choosing a higher-capacity skimmer, you also future-proof your operation against potential increases in oil output or changes in the application’s scope. Additionally, higher-capacity skimmers often operate more efficiently, reducing the likelihood of overworking the unit and extending its operational lifespan.

Factors That Impact Skimmer Efficiency

Optimum Conditions Are RareOil skimmer capacities are rated under ideal conditions, which rarely exist in real-world applications. Factors such as oil viscosity, water temperature, and the homogeneity of the oil can significantly impact the amount of oil removed. For example:

Viscosity: Thicker oils require more effort and time to remove, which can reduce the effective skimming rate of a smaller unit.

Oil Distribution: Uneven oil layers on the surface can lead to inefficiencies in skimming, particularly for smaller units with limited reach.

Temperature: Cold water can increase oil viscosity, further complicating removal efforts.

Variability in Oil RemovalPredicting the rate at which oil will be removed is inherently difficult due to changing environmental and operational factors. Weather, debris in the water, and fluctuations in oil production can all impact performance. A skimmer with a higher capacity acts as a buffer against these variables, ensuring consistent performance even under less-than-ideal conditions. This reliability is especially critical for industries where downtime or incomplete oil removal can have costly repercussions.

The Rule of Thumb

To avoid the pitfalls of undersizing, always opt for an oil skimmer rated at least twice the capacity you believe you need. This provides a margin of safety and accounts for real-world inefficiencies that may arise. For example, if your application requires a skimmer capable of removing 20 gallons of oil per hour, invest in one rated for at least 40 gallons per hour. This approach not only ensures efficiency but also allows your operation to adapt to unexpected changes without requiring immediate equipment upgrades.

Additional Benefits of Proper Sizing

Reduced Maintenance: A properly sized skimmer operates within its intended capacity, reducing wear and tear and the frequency of maintenance.

Energy Efficiency: Larger skimmers often use their energy more efficiently, as they can handle higher volumes without straining their components.

Compliance Assurance: Many industries have strict environmental regulations regarding oil removal. A higher-capacity skimmer helps ensure compliance by consistently meeting or exceeding removal requirements.

Conclusion

While it may be tempting to purchase a smaller oil skimmer to save money upfront, the long-term inefficiencies and ineffectiveness make this an unwise choice. By selecting a skimmer based on the size of the area to be skimmed and ensuring it has at least double the required capacity, you can achieve reliable and efficient oil removal for your application. Remember, investing in the right skimmer now will save you time, money, and effort down the road. Proper sizing not only enhances operational efficiency but also provides peace of mind, knowing that your equipment is prepared to handle both current and future challenges.

Groundwater is an essential resource for drinking water, irrigation, and industrial processes. However, it can become contaminated due to spills, leaks, and other pollutants, particularly oil and petroleum products. Effective remediation of oil-contaminated groundwater is crucial for protecting public health and the environment. One effective method for removing oil from contaminated water is the use of belt oil skimmers. This blog post will explore how belt oil skimmers work, their benefits, and their role in groundwater remediation.

Understanding Groundwater Contamination

Groundwater contamination is a pressing issue that can arise from various sources, including:

Industrial Spills: Factories and industrial sites can experience accidental spills, leading to oil and chemicals leaking into the groundwater.

Transportation Accidents: Oil spills from tankers, pipelines, or trucks can significantly impact nearby water sources.

Agricultural Runoff: Fertilizers and pesticides used in agriculture can leach into groundwater, affecting its quality.

Landfills: Improperly managed landfills can release leachate, a toxic liquid that can contaminate groundwater with oil and other pollutants.

Given the potential sources of contamination, addressing oil spills and leaks is essential for maintaining groundwater quality.

What is Groundwater Remediation?

Groundwater remediation is the process of cleaning up and restoring contaminated groundwater to ensure it is safe for use. Contaminants can include a variety of harmful substances, including oil, heavy metals, and chemicals. When oil spills occur, it can create a thick layer of contamination that poses significant risks to water quality and the surrounding ecosystem.

Remediation techniques vary based on the type and extent of contamination. Common methods include pump and treat systems, bioremediation, and natural attenuation. However, when oil is present in large quantities, specialized equipment like belt oil skimmers is often employed to effectively remove the contaminant.

What are Belt Oil Skimmers?

Belt oil skimmers are specialized devices designed to remove oil from the surface of water. They consist of a continuous belt that floats on the water, using various mechanisms to attract and collect oil. As the belt moves through the water, it picks up oil and transfers it to a collection point, where it can be stored or disposed of properly.

Belt oil skimmers work based on the principle that oil is less dense than water and will float on the surface. The design of these skimmers allows them to capitalize on this difference, making them an efficient tool for oil removal.

How Belt Oil Skimmers Work in Groundwater Remediation

Belt oil skimmers are particularly effective in groundwater remediation for several reasons:

Surface Collection: These skimmers are designed to float on the surface of the water, making them ideal for collecting free-phase oil, which is oil that has not yet mixed with water. This is crucial because free-phase oil can create a barrier, preventing oxygen from reaching the underlying groundwater and impacting the remediation process.

Continuous Operation: The belt continuously moves, allowing for ongoing collection of oil without the need for constant monitoring or manual intervention. This automated process increases efficiency and reduces labor costs.

Efficient Removal: Belt oil skimmers can remove large quantities of oil in a relatively short time, significantly reducing the contaminant load in the water. This rapid removal helps to mitigate the immediate risks associated with oil contamination.

Adaptable Installation: They can be installed in various environments, including industrial sites, landfills, and natural water bodies, making them versatile for different remediation projects. Whether in a confined space or a larger area, belt oil skimmers can be adapted to fit the needs of the specific site.

The Process of Using Belt Oil Skimmers

The deployment of belt oil skimmers typically involves the following steps:

This blog delves into the considerations for selecting the appropriate oil skimmer, belt materials, and associated components to ensure optimal performance in various scenarios.

Application Variables

There are many variables in an application that will dictate which oil skimmer and belt material will work best in removing hydrocarbons from fluids. Key factors include:

Type of Hydrocarbon: Different hydrocarbons have varying properties that affect skimming efficiency. For instance, light oils may require different handling compared to heavier, more viscous oils.

Contaminated Fluid: The nature of the fluid being treated can impact the choice of skimmer. Water, for example, behaves differently than other industrial fluids, affecting the skimmer’s performance.

Environmental Conditions: Temperature, weather, and other external factors play a crucial role. Extreme temperatures can influence the viscosity of the hydrocarbons and the performance of the skimming equipment.

Operational Requirements: Specific needs of the application, such as continuous or intermittent operation, determine the type of skimmer and its features. High-volume operations might need more robust, high-capacity skimmers.

Outdoor Applications and Heating Requirements

In outdoor applications, maintaining the fluidity of the skimmed product is crucial. Considerations include:

Heaters: Essential for keeping the skimmed product fluid for effective removal, especially in grease skimming where higher viscosity at all temperatures is a challenge. Heaters ensure the hydrocarbon remains in a liquid state for efficient skimming.

Polymer Materials: Limited in heat tolerance, often requiring only tray heaters. These are suitable for moderate climates but may not perform well in extreme cold.

Steel Media: Can apply heat to both the tray and the medium, improving performance in severe winter climates. This dual heating capability ensures consistent skimming efficiency even in harsh weather conditions.

Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel housing may be needed to resist corrosion. This is especially important in marine or highly humid environments where equipment longevity can be compromised by rust.

Protection: Above ground enclosures and underground manway mounting kits provide additional protection from the elements, ensuring that the skimming equipment remains operational despite harsh weather conditions. These protective measures can prevent damage from debris, rainfall, and other environmental factors.

Material Considerations for Wiper Blades

Choosing the right material for wiper blades is critical for effective skimming. Common materials include:

Nitrile: Suitable for use up to 176°F in neutral pH liquids, making it a versatile option for many applications. Nitrile wiper blades offer a good balance of durability and chemical resistance.

A common misconception is that you can buy a smaller skimmer based on gallons-per-hour skimming capacity for a big job to save money.

A common misconception is that you can buy a smaller skimmer based on gallons-per-hour skimming capacity for a big job to save money. However, purchasing a small or mini unit instead of an industrial sized skimmer can be an ineffective method of oil skimming.

Oil Skimmers Selected by Size of the Area

Oil skimmers should be selected by the size of the area that needs to be skimmed, not just by the amount of oil needing to be removed. Choosing an oil skimmer that has the capacity to remove at least 2 times the capacity needed by the application should be the deciding factor.

Oil Skimmer Capacities

Oil skimmer capacities are based on optimum conditions and homogeneity of oil. Viscosity, temperature of the water, and other factors can affect the amount of oil picked up by an oil skimmer. It is impossible to accurately predict how fast your oil will be picked up. Therefore, as a rule of thumb, purchase an oil skimmer that is rated at least twice the capacity needed.

Make the Right Decision

Paying a cheap price up front might result in you paying more in the long run. It’s best to invest in a quality skimmer that is from a reputable vendor from the start. Oil skimmers are simple in design, but you will still be better off with a skimmer that is manufactured with the highest quality. It will operate efficiently and consistently for a longer period of time. Removing oil from water is a necessary practice in most industrial applications. Spend your money wisely to get the job done right.

Remember…

Selecting an oil skimmer can be a complex decision-making process. There are various factors you have to consider about your application when choosing the right skimmer. Abanaki oil skimmers are durable and built to last, even in harsh applications. They have been proven in thousands of applications and are an environmental solution to unwanted oil in water.
When groundwater becomes contaminated it can cause all sorts of problems. It is important to remove the contaminated water as soon as possible to keep from spreading and to get the contaminants contained. Recently, a UK beverage facility had a diesel spill at part of its outdoor facility. The company had two issues to tackle with the diesel clean up. First they needed something that would not take up too much space but would still efficiently remove the oil and second, they were limited on power supplies to run the equipment. The company turned to Abanaki for a solution.

An Abanaki salesperson visited the site to better access what the company’s needs were. Once there it was clear that a Solar Powered PetroXtractor could complete the task with ease. It would tackle both of the customer’s issues; it would remove the spilled diesel and clean up the contaminated area and the solar option would also solve the limited power supply at the site.

The Abanaki PetroXtractor is a dependable and cost effective means of removing oil, fuel, and other floating hydrocarbons from water where access to the fluid surface is limited. It is part of an efficient groundwater remediation system for groundwater contaminated by oil, using existing recovery and monitoring wells. Often, the PetroXtractor Well Oil Skimmer working alone will reduce oil or fuel content to an acceptable E.P.A. level. Models are available for two inch, four inch, and six inch or larger ID well casings, with removal rates up to 12 gph (based on SEA 30 motor oil). Depths of 100 feet or more can be accommodated without the use of pumps.

Abanaki solar options are perfect for applications where power sources are limited or nonexistent. Abanaki also offers secured enclosures that are used in situations where there is a need to keep the oil skimmer from being tampered with or in situations where the operation of oil removal equipment may be deemed unsightly. These lockable poly shelters are available in two sizes to accommodate various oil skimmer sizes and option configurations.
