Cold weather can cause water being skimmed to freeze and make oil more viscous, both of which impede a skimmer from collecting oil like it would in ambient temperatures. For our customers with outdoor skimmers in groundwater remediation and other applications, being prepared for the seasons keeps oil removal running steadily, no matter the weather.

At this point, it’s time to assess the site conditions and any factors that could affect or alter your oil skimmer’s ability to carry out its designated oil removal functions continuously.

The use of heat tape around discharge hoses can help to keep collected product closer to ambient temperatures. Heat tracing wires and weatherproof insulation covers are also viable options. A shelter or enclosure for the skimmer can help to insulate heat and protect the unit from outside elements.

An important note on belt material: for applications in cold-prone environments, polymer belts are ideal because they retain a slight film of oil that helps to further oil attraction as the belt passes through the fluid. Their synthetic nature also helps to prevent ice from making the belt too stiff or collecting ice. Mechanisms to help break up ice or heavy mats of oil may also be ideal.

Next, a couple of recommendations:

Keep a spare belt and set of wipers on hand. This helps to prevent unnecessary downtime between part replacements. Additionally, set up a regular schedule to monitor your oil skimmer during cold weather. Regular check-ins ensure that if something goes awry, you and your team can catch it early.

If it is necessary to completely retire your skimmer for the winter, ensure that it is clean, dry, and protected from the elements. If the unit does not need to be fully disassembled and put away during cold weather, we recommend removing (and cleaning) at least the belt and tail pulley if there is potential for the water to freeze.

Discover how proactive oil skimming supports effective coolant maintenance routines. Learn how removing tramp oil prevents bacterial growth, extends coolant life, and improves workplace safety.

How Oil Skimming Supports Coolant Maintenance Routines

In CNC machining and other metalworking applications, maintaining a healthy coolant maintenance routine is essential.

A healthy routine fosters a fluid that supports tool life, a safe work environment, and a consistent, quality output. The goal should always be to keep coolant within the manufacturer’s recommended operating range while taking measures to remove tramp oil, metal chips, and prevent bacterial growth and concentration changes from shortening coolant life.

Tramp Oil

Tramp oil is an umbrella term referring to any unwanted oil that settles into coolant bays or sumps via machine way lubricants, hydraulic leaks, spindle oils, and greases as a result of regular operations. This can be problematic when machines are off for the weekend, as oil rises to the surface and prevents oxygen exchange. When this happens, it creates the perfect environment for anaerobic bacteria to thrive, which excrete sulfur scented hydrogen sulfide gas.

Other side effects of tramp oil contamination include coolant instability, which affects tool and machining performance as a result of increased heat transfer, and a generally shorter fluid life. In cutting tool operations, oil-laden coolant that comes in contact with hot tools may smoke, contributing to poor visibility and safety concerns for operators.

Disposing of coolant heavily concentrated with oil also tends to be more expensive than disposing of the two separately, as there are companies that can reuse or resell the separated oil for recycling.

Proactive Oil Removal

Because tramp oil is an ever-present source of contamination across the metalworking industry, oil skimming is a proactive means of routine maintenance. In using the word ‘proactive’ when we talk about oil removal, we’re iterating that removing tramp oil before it can become a shop-wide issue saves time, money, and effort.

Operating on the differences in surface tension and specific gravity between oil and water, oil skimmers use oleophilic media to pick up oil and carry it out of the fluid to be scraped into disposal containers. When installed in coolant bays, sumps, or reservoirs, they collect and remove tramp oil without picking up the coolant itself, preventing buildup and associated issues.

For one bolt manufacturer out of Cleveland, OH, tramp oil contamination in their coolant created clouds of smoke during the trimming process. The air quality and visibility in the shop became so poor that at times workers could see only feet in front of them.

The problem stemmed from machine coolant being combined with lubricating oil as it seeped from oiled parts into a common reservoir. Anytime oily coolant was sprayed on hot bolts, the oil smoked.

Struggling with the smoke, plus the replacement strain the tramp oil placed on their coolant system, they installed several oil skimmers throughout the operation. The skimmers, Model 4 Oil Grabbers, were able to collect and remove tramp oil from coolant reservoirs at a rate of roughly 32gph. By operating continuously, they prevent oils from accumulating so that coolant remains effective for longer periods. The manufacturer’s plant conditions improved. They replaced their coolant less frequently, and air quality and visibility throughout the shop increased.

Healthy coolant routines should include proper mixing, regular monitoring of pH levels and concentration, chip removal, regular cleaning, and of course, consistent tramp oil removal.

When incorporated into part of the larger shop routine, oil skimming helps boost tool performance, working conditions, and longer fluid life. While there are a variety of oil skimmers capable of removing tramp oil in metalworking applications, we suggest working directly with an Abanaki representative to decipher the best unit for your specific operational needs.

Troubleshooting Your Abanaki Coolant Maintenance Oil Skimmer: Tube and Disk Edition

As we discussed last month (you can read that blog post here if you have a belt skimmer), dealing with skimmer downtime can be extremely frustrating—you purchased the skimmer to improve some aspect of your operation, and you’re back to square one when something goes wrong. We get it. We’re here for you, which is why we’ve put together a guide for troubleshooting with your tube or disk-type skimmer. Here are some of the most common problems we see, and how you can troubleshoot to identify and solve them. Checking the unit regularly and performing routine maintenance will help keep your skimmer operating at its best over time. Things like skimming media replacement (belt, tube, disk, etc.), motor replacement, and wiper replacement should be done at the appropriate times based on your skimmer’s model and runtime requirements.

Abanaki Mighty Disk Oil Skimmer

Disk Skimmers (Mighty Disk, Cool Disk)

Disk skimmers operate by rotating disk-shaped mediums through liquid and collecting oil on the disk media, which is then scraped off by wipers and discharged. Surface tension is key. Similarly to belt skimmers, it is important to consider reach, or the amount of the disk that gets immersed in fluid, when evaluating the effectiveness of your disk skimmer. Less disk in the fluid generally equates less oil removed, so the possibility of fluctuating fluid levels can seriously inhibit a disk skimmer’s performance.

Disk skimmers need to be sized accordingly- take into account their reach into the tank, ensure that the disk is the right size for desired removal rates, and that the media is submerged at the right depth. The disk must always be penetrating the fluid to operate properly. Check that the skimmer is mounted levelly, on a stable and flat surface where the disk is submerged and close to areas where oil collects naturally.

My disk is warping.

Application temperatures above 160 degrees may cause disk media to warp and create only intermittent contact with the wiper blades; this does not occur very often because our disks are 1/2″ thick, but if it does, we recommend switching to a belt skimmer with a belt suited for high temperature applications.

My skimmer isn’t removing oil at the rate I expected.

Abanaki Mighty Disk Oil Skimmer Wiper Blades Close Up

If the skimmer isn’t removing the amount of oil you expected and appears to be in working order, issues like incorrect sizing, incorrect media, or tank fluctuations could be at play. Utilizing an incompatible skimming media for your application’s requirements will inhibit the skimmer’s ability to pick up oil as intended. If your application has extreme temperatures, chemicals, or Ph levels, it’s critical to let your salesperson know so they can help you pick the best option for your application.

Examine- is there new turbulence in the tank? Fluid level fluctuations? These can prevent the disk media from accessing enough fluid to remove oil properly.

Because disk skimmers rely on reach, they should be sized based on the surface area of the tank they’re skimming, rather than the volume of oil present. We recommend going with a disk diameter large enough to reach the fluid at its lowest operational level with the proper placement for oil discharge. As a general rule, the skimmer you select should be able to handle roughly two times the required removal capacity for your application to account for any fluctuations and to ensure the machine is not overworked.

My skimmer isn’t removing oil at the rate it used to.

If the skimmer isn’t removing oil like it used to, check for wear or warping on the disk (see above), as well as the condition of the wiper blades. Wiper blades need to be flush with the skimming media, neither too tight or too loose. Double check that the wiper blades have the appropriate amount of tension, and clean them if there is evidence of debris or grease that could be preventing a flush contact with the disk’s surface. If the wiper blades are too tight, they’ll wear very quickly, and if they’re too loose, oil will remain on the skimming media and reduce removal rates. If the wiper blades look visibly worn or ragged, it’s likely time to replace them. We recommend keeping an extra set of wiper blades on hand for quick replacement to help reduce the possibility of downtime. Factors like temperature, pH levels, and chemical concentrations may also cause wiper blades to bend away from the disk, creating oil removal issues. If this is something you’re noticing, we do have stainless steel wiper blades as a replacement option.

Abanaki TubeTastic Oil Skimmer

Tube Skimmers (Oil Viper, TubeTastic)

Tube skimmers are a great option for tight spaces or low-level fluid situations where a belt or disk skimmer are incompatible, and use a continuously moving, oil attracting tube to capture and discharge oil via surface tension. The tube media snakes out under the surface of the fluid to collect oil, and then the tube circles through to unique wipers surrounding the tube, with the result of a virtually oil free tube as it enters the fluid again.

Oftentimes, we see misconceptions happen with the tube length needed for this kind of skimmer—the collector tube does not float out over the surface, but sinks into the fluid sump. Ensure that your tube is not too long, as this creates a greater possibility for the tube to coil up on itself, get tangled, and cause motor issues. Measure the vertical distance from the skimmer’s mounting point down to the lowest fluid level in the tank to get the correct length.

Ensure that the tube is installed the correct way, so that the steel washer is in contact with the base of the skimmer and not the nitrile washer. If the tube is backwards, the washer will be puled into the drive cassette, stopping the drive gears and causing motor failure.

If you have a TubeTastic, please note that it is suited only for ambient applications, and that high temperatures or Ph levels can cause the tube to swell and come apart.

My skimmer isn’t picking up oil like I thought it would.

If your tube skimmer is installed correctly but not picking up the amount of oil you’d planned on, check that it’s installed in an area where oil actually collects. Additionally, ensure that the skimmer is sized correctly for the application, and that it is capable of handling twice the amount of oil you expected to remove to account for fluctuations without strain. Like other skimmers, tube configurations should be sized based on the surface area of the tank they’re skimming, not the volume of oil present. Excessive turbulence in a tank can also inhibit removal rates.

TubeTastic Oil Skimmer Replacement Tube

My skimmer isn’t picking up oil like it used to.

If you notice that your skimmer’s removal capacity is dropping, check for wear or splitting on the tube (skimming media), as well as for any debris that could be preventing the wipers from operating properly. Examine if there have been any recent changes in the environment that could affect tank level or chemical concentration.

My tube is picking up too much water or coolant.

If the skimmer is picking up too much water or coolant, consider runtime- is the skimmer running only when there is oil present in the tank, or is it running all the time? Running the skimmer when there is not oil present in the sump or tank can increase wear on the skimming media and motor, as well as increase the possibility that it collects excess water or coolant. We recommend only running the machine when there is enough oil to warrant skimming, in areas where oil collects naturally.

Having trouble with your industrial belt oil skimmer? Learn how to troubleshoot common maintenance issues, restore proper skimming performance, and keep your system running smoothly.

Why isn’t my belt skimmer working properly?

At Abanaki, we know that skimmer downtime can affect your operation, and when your belt oil skimmer isn’t operating as intended it can be frustrating to try and figure out what’s going on.

Here are some of the most common problems we see, and how you can troubleshoot to identify and solve them. Because Abanaki’s belt skimmers rely on surface tension rather than pumps for oil collection, it is critical to monitor the unit’s mechanics to ensure their operating efficiency. Checking the unit regularly and performing routine maintenance will help keep your skimmer operating at its best over time. Things like oil changes, skimming media replacement (belt, tube, disk, etc.), motor replacement, and wiper replacement should be done at the appropriate times based on your skimmer’s model and runtime requirements.

My belt is slipping.

Abanaki Model 8 Oil Grabber Oil Skimmer

If the belt is slipping on your skimmer, check that the belt is passing through the wiper blades without any obstructions. Is the tail pulley able to turn freely without obstructions? Coolant and oil mixtures can be very slippery, but you can add a spacer (size depends on skimmer and belt width) between the spring and base plate for extra tension, which should add the resistance the belt needs to keep from slipping. When it comes to wiper blades, make sure not to overtighten them; they should make contact with the belt so that there is a slight bend as the belt passes through them, and the belt should be directly centered in the middle of the discharge troughs.

Another thing to check is whether the skimmer is mounted levelly. If it’s not, a free hanging belt won’t be able to track correctly over the pulley. Remounting the skimmer to be perfectly level should help. If you have a skimmer that has a yoke and chain (ex: Model 4 or Model 8) make sure that the belt is holding the weight of the tail pulley and that there is slack in the chain.

Finally, is there debris present? Be sure to check that the tail pulley is rotating freely and is free of any floating debris that could inhibit proper rotation movement.

Oil isn’t being collected like it used to.

If you notice a decrease in your unit’s skimming capacity, check that the wiper blades are making good contact with the belt or disk. The wiper blades should be tightened enough to contact the skimming media with enough tension to scrape oil off effectively, but wipers that are too tight will cause premature wear on both the media and the wipers themselves.

Additionally, check for debris, tears, and wearing in the wipers. When wipers are not in good operating condition, they cannot scrape oil from the belt effectively, and oil will end up back in the tank or sump.

Abanaki Polymer Belt

Another thing to check on is if there are rust inhibitors present in the coolant environment—rust inhibitors, or chemical compounds that are applied or mixed with metals to prevent or slow corrosion, can coat stainless steel belts and prevent oil from being picked up. If this is the case, another belt material like Abanaki’s elastomer or polymer belts can help, as rust inhibitors don’t have the same sticking effect on these synthetic belt materials.

I just installed my skimmer, but it isn’t collecting the amount of oil I had in mind.

If your skimmer isn’t collecting the amount of oil you envisioned and appears to be in perfect working order, it might be too small. We’ve actually written another blog post on this topic which you can read here, but purchasing a small skimmer based solely on gallons-per-hour skimming capacity can create long term skimming inefficiencies that outweigh any initial purchase savings.

An oil skimmer should have the capacity to remove at least twice the amount of oil required in your specific application to account for condition fluctuations and performance longevity. A good rule of thumb is that when selecting a skimmer, be mindful that you’re making a decision based on the size of the area to be skimmed rather than the amount of oil that needs to be removed. Smaller units can struggle to skim large surface areas effectively, meaning the unit will have to work longer and harder achieve intended results. This can also lead to maintenance issues and drops in overall skimmer productivity.

If your skimmer is picking up a lot of water, try evaluating how often you’re running the skimmer- when is oil visibly collecting? Skimmers should run only when oil is actually present, and running it when oil isn’t present increases the skimmer’s chances of collecting water. Setting the skimmer’s runtime with a timer or installing an Abanaki Oil Concentrator can help minimize water collection in the right applications.

Something else to consider is that the belt should be at least two feet away from any tank walls, and positioned so that the belt’s downstroke is aimed towards the bulk of oil present in the tank. The belt must also be long enough that the tail pulley is submerged in the fluid at all times.

For CNC machine shops, tungsten carbide tooling has always been one of the most important — and expensive — operational investments. Every day, the cost of that investment grows.

In recent years, tungsten prices have risen significantly due to a combination of supply shortages, export controls, tariffs, and growing global demand. Because tungsten carbide is an essential wear-resistant material used in CNC inserts, drills, end mills, and cutting tools, these price increases directly impact machining operations across multiple industries.

CNC shops are searching for practical ways to reduce unnecessary wear, extend tool life, and control operating expenses. One often-overlooked solution is coolant maintenance with the use of oil skimmers.

Why Tungsten Carbide Tools Can Wear Out Faster Than Expected

Many shops focus on machining parameters like feeds, speeds, coatings, and toolpath optimization to maximize insert life. While these factors are critical, coolant condition also plays a major role in protecting tungsten carbide tooling.

Over time, tramp oil from machine ways, hydraulic systems, and lubricants contaminates coolant tanks. When this oil accumulates, problems begin to develop:

Reduced cooling efficiency

Poor heat transfer at the cutting zone

Increased thermal stress on tooling

Bacterial growth and coolant degradation

Sludge buildup and clogged systems

When coolant quality declines, tungsten carbide tools are exposed to higher operating temperatures and unstable cutting conditions that accelerate edge wear, chipping, and premature insert failure.

In other words, dirty coolant can quietly shorten the life of expensive carbide tools.

The Relationship Between Oil Skimmers and Tungsten Carbide Tool Life

Oil skimmers help solve this problem by continuously removing floating tramp oil from coolant systems. By keeping coolant cleaner and more stable, oil skimmers help CNC machines maintain proper lubrication and heat transfer during machining operations, directly impacting the performance and lifespan of tungsten carbide tooling.

Benefits of using an oil skimmer include:

Extended Coolant Life

Removing tramp oil slows coolant degradation and reduces the frequency of coolant replacement.

Reduced Thermal Stress on Tooling

Cleaner coolant improves heat dissipation at the cutting edge, helping tungsten carbide maintain its hardness and wear resistance longer.

Longer Tool Life

Stable coolant conditions reduce premature wear, edge chipping, and insert failure.

Reduced Maintenance and Downtime

Cleaner systems experience fewer clogs, odors, bacterial issues, and maintenance interruptions.

Lower Operating Costs

Fewer insert changes and extended coolant life help offset rising carbide tooling costs.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

With tungsten carbide prices expected to remain elevated, every tool change carries a greater financial impact than before.

That makes coolant maintenance more than routine housekeeping: it becomes a strategic way to protect tooling investments and improve operational efficiency.

While oil skimmers cannot reduce the global cost of tungsten, they are one of the simplest upgrades CNC shops can implement to help increase the lifetime of expensive carbide tooling.

A Simple Solution with Long-Term Impact

By continuously removing tramp oil before it creates larger problems, skimmers help CNC shops:

Protect tungsten carbide tooling

Improve machining consistency

Reduce coolant maintenance

Lower downtime

Extend the life of critical machine components

Proactive coolant management with the use of oil skimmers can make a difference on the shop floor and the bottom line– not only for maintenance, but for building a smarter strategy to protect tungsten carbide investments.

When it comes to removing floating oils from industrial tanks, pits, and coolant systems, choosing the right belt skimmer vs. tube skimmer option is a question that comes up repeatedly:

Which works better — a belt skimmer or a tube skimmer?

The answer is not always straightforward. Both technologies are effective oil removal solutions, and both operate using the same basic principle: breaking the surface tension of the water so floating oil can adhere to the skimming surface and be removed from the system.

The real question is not which skimmer is universally better — it is which skimmer is better for your specific application.

Understanding How Belt and Tube Skimmers Work

Both belt oil skimmers and tube oil skimmers are designed to remove floating oils from water-based fluids. As the belt or tube travels across the liquid surface, oil adheres to the material. A set of wipers then removes the collected oil for disposal or recycling.

While the operating principle is similar, the design differences can make one option more suitable depending on the tank size, oil volume, and available installation space.

When a Belt Skimmer May Be the Better Choice

Many facilities prefer belt skimmers because they can remove oil efficiently while occupying minimal space around the tank or machine.

Belt skimmers are often selected for:

Compact installations

Smaller or narrow tanks

Applications requiring higher oil removal rates

Systems with limited mounting space

Because the belt travels vertically into the fluid, belt skimmers can effectively collect oil from a large surface area without requiring extensive horizontal coverage.

When a Tube Skimmer May Be the Better Choice

Tube skimmers are commonly chosen when wider surface coverage is needed. The floating tube moves across the liquid surface and can collect oil over a broader area of the tank or pit.

Tube skimmers are often ideal for:

Large open tanks or pits

Wide coolant systems

Applications with dispersed floating oil

Systems where extended surface contact improves collection

The continuous floating tube allows oil to be collected from multiple areas of the liquid surface simultaneously.

Two Critical Factors When Selecting an Oil Skimmer

With so many belt and tube skimmer options available, choosing the correct model starts with evaluating two key factors.

Oil Removal Capacity

The first consideration is how much oil needs to be removed.

Every skimmer model is rated based on the gallons per hour it can collect. Applications with heavier oil contamination may require larger or higher-capacity systems to maintain fluid cleanliness and prevent oil buildup.

Selecting a skimmer with insufficient capacity can reduce overall performance and allow oil contamination to continue accumulating.

Tank or Pit Dimensions

The second factor is the size and surface area of the tank.

Even if oil accumulation is relatively low, a small skimmer may not perform effectively if the surface area is too large. Different skimmer designs and sizes are capable of pulling oil from different distances and coverage areas.

A properly sized skimmer should match both the oil load and the dimensions of the application.

Choosing the Best Oil Skimmer for Long-Term Performance

There is no single “best” skimmer for every operation. Belt skimmers and tube skimmers both provide reliable floating oil removal when properly matched to the application.

The most effective solution depends on:

Oil volume

Tank size

Surface area

Available installation space

Desired removal rate

By evaluating these factors early, facilities can improve coolant life, reduce maintenance costs, and maintain cleaner wastewater and fluid systems. Whether you choose a belt skimmer or a tube skimmer, selecting the right size and design is the key to achieving consistent oil removal performance.

Oil contamination in coolants, wash water, or sump pits can lead to increased operating costs, foul odors, premature equipment failure, and even regulatory violations.

Fortunately, there’s a simple and effective solution: oil skimmers.

These straightforward devices efficiently remove floating oils from water or coolant, offering both environmental and financial benefits. But just how efficient are they—and what kind of results can you really expect?

Why Waste Oil Recovery Matters

Recovering used oil is about more than just good housekeeping. It’s a vital step toward:

Regulatory compliance

Environmental stewardship

Cost reduction

Operational efficiency

Oil that accumulates on the surface of coolant tanks or wastewater systems doesn’t just sit there harmlessly. It fosters bacterial growth, contributes to foul odors, interferes with filtration, and shortens the life of both coolant and cutting tools. More importantly, discharging oil-contaminated water can lead to steep fines or legal consequences under environmental regulations.

Check out our Oil Skimming Guide to learn more.

When companies take the time to properly remove and manage waste oil, they’re not only protecting their operations—they’re also improving safety, cleanliness, and sustainability.

What Makes an Oil Skimmer Efficient?

An oil skimmer is a mechanical device designed to continuously remove oil that floats on the surface of water or coolant. Whether it uses a belt, tube, disk, or drum, the goal is the same: attract and collect surface oils with minimal water carryover.

The efficiency of a skimmer depends on several key factors:

Oil recovery rate (typically measured in gallons per hour)

Oil-to-water pickup ratio

Ease of use and maintenance

Durability in harsh environments

Well-designed skimmers can operate 24/7 with minimal maintenance, often removing several gallons of oil per hour. Over days or weeks, that adds up to a significant volume of recovered waste oil—and a huge reduction in disposal costs.

7 Key Benefits of Using an Oil Skimmer

Here’s why an oil skimmer is one of the most efficient, cost-effective tools you can add to your operation:

Reduced Disposal Costs

Disposing of coolant contaminated with oil is far more expensive than disposing of oil alone. Skimming the oil reduces the volume of hazardous waste, which significantly cuts disposal expenses.

Oil Recycling Opportunities

Recovered oil can sometimes be reused in other areas of your operation, or even sold for recycling—creating a small but meaningful revenue stream from what would otherwise be waste.

Extended Coolant Life

Tramp oil speeds up coolant degradation. Removing surface oil helps maintain coolant quality longer, meaning fewer fluid changes and less downtime.

Cleaner, Safer Workplace

Oil-contaminated coolant often generates smoke when it contacts hot tools. Skimming removes the oil, reducing smoke and making the work area cleaner and healthier.

Increased Tool and Machine Life

Oil-free coolant lowers bacterial growth and protects machine components from corrosion, resulting in fewer maintenance issues and longer-lasting equipment.

Compliance with Environmental Regulations

Skimmers help facilities meet wastewater discharge standards and stay in compliance with EPA or local environmental laws, reducing the risk of fines or operational shutdowns.

Improved Hygiene and Odor Control

By removing surface oil, skimmers prevent anaerobic bacteria buildup‚Äîeliminating the unpleasant “rotten egg” smell that can develop in coolant tanks or wastewater systems.

A Simple Device with Serious Impact

One of the best things about oil skimmers is how simple they are to use. Most models can be mounted directly to the side of a tank or pit and begin working right away. Once installed, they require only routine maintenance like cleaning the collection surface or occasionally replacing a belt or wiper blade.

Their low energy use, minimal operator involvement, and around-the-clock operation make them incredibly efficient over time. In many cases, a single skimmer can replace the need for expensive absorbent materials or chemical treatments—and operate more reliably in the long run.

Oil skimmers may be small, but their benefits are enormous. From reducing environmental risks to improving air quality, extending coolant life, and lowering operational costs, these devices offer a simple solution to a complex and expensive problem.

Whether you run a small machine shop or manage a large manufacturing plant, an oil skimmer is one of the most effective, low-maintenance tools you can add to your operation.

Hydraulic fracturing operations require substantial amounts of water. A single fracking well typically consumes millions of gallons of water, with the composition of the fracturing fluid being approximately 98.0-99.5 percent water and sand. The remaining fraction consists of chemical additives, which vary based on the characteristics of both the water used and the specific shale formation being fractured. Once injected, a portion of this fluid—ranging from 20 to 40 percent—returns to the surface as flowback water. This water is often contaminated with not only the original chemical additives but also naturally occurring substances from deep underground, including heavy metals, salts, and hydrocarbons.

The disposal and treatment of fracking wastewater pose significant environmental challenges. Proper management of this wastewater is essential to prevent contamination of groundwater and surface water sources. One effective solution for addressing oil contamination in fracking wastewater is the use of oil skimming technology. Oil skimmers take advantage of the differences in specific gravity and surface tension between oil and water, allowing them to efficiently remove floating hydrocarbons from the wastewater before disposal or further treatment.

Belt Oil Skimmers: Efficient and Eco-Friendly Wastewater Treatment

Belt oil skimmers, in particular, offer an environmentally responsible and cost-effective method for removing trace amounts of oil from fracking wastewater. These skimmers operate by continuously attracting oil to a moving belt, which then scrapes off the contaminants and collects them in a designated container. With the ability to function in depths of up to 100 feet and operate 24/7 with minimal supervision, belt oil skimmers provide a low-maintenance and energy-efficient solution for wastewater treatment facilities.

Beyond fracking applications, oil skimming technology is widely used across various industries. Companies rely on oil skimmers for industrial wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation, and coolant management in machine shops. By effectively removing oil from these fluids, skimmers help businesses comply with municipal and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water quality regulations while also extending the lifespan of machine tool coolants. Additionally, oil skimming serves as a valuable pre-treatment step before filtration, preventing oil from clogging or reducing the efficiency of filter media.

As concerns over water contamination and environmental sustainability continue to grow, the role of advanced wastewater treatment solutions, including oil skimmers, becomes increasingly critical. Implementing such technologies ensures that industries utilizing hydraulic fracturing and other water-intensive processes can mitigate their ecological footprint while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards.
