Oil Skimmer Technology Offers Pollution Solution that Saves Money Instead of Raising Operating Costs

Oil skimming is a simple, dependable and effective means of removing oil from water. And unlike some other processes, it offers users the potential for major cost savings. At Schenectady Chemicals Canada, Ltd., plant manager Fred Soukereff estimates that his company has saved $5,000 annually by using the skimmer instead of former methods of waste removal. “The real saving, however, is in the fact that we have a much cleaner plant effluent discharge,” he points out.

Celebrating Earth Day 2012: Oil Skimmers for Clean Water

Help Give Access to Clean and Safe Water WorldwideWater is a basic necessity for all forms of life. It is something simple and seemingly readily available. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to have access to clean and safe drinking water. An estimated 783 million people do not have access to water that is clean or safe enough to utilize. WaterAid is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of those in some of the world’s poorest communities, by helping them gain safe access to clean drinking water. In addition, WaterAid uses hygiene education to help further and maintain lifestyle improvements of those in need. To commemorate Earth Day 2012, Abanaki will be making a monetary donation to WaterAid from all oil skimmer and oil skimmer belts sold from Earth Day on April 22 through May 31.Read this complete article.

Ask Skimmerman, and your question will be answered in an e-mail message. Read below to see Skimmerman’s answers to other questions.

From Garrett:

I purchased a Mighty Mini with a steel belt for my CNC machine but the oil does not seem to be attracted to the belt. Why is this happening?

Skimmerman answers:

Coolant sometimes has rust inhibitors in it, which can coat the steel belt and actually repel the oil. This can easily be fixed by switching to an Elastomer belt which is ideal for coolant applications!

From Luke:

The skimmer I have picks up the oil great, but it seems too thick to flow down the trough. What are my options?

Skimmerman answers:

You need to heat the trough to fix that. In fact, we have various heating options. Often times, the heat will thin out the oil enough to allow a steady flow down the trough. Contact your representative for more information on your options.
