Oil Skimmer Prevents Groundwater Pollution While Saving Costs

The Mighty Mini® oil skimmer can be used in industrial wastewater systems to remove floating oil and hydrocarbons.
Idaho Recycling/Consulting and Associates (IRC) of Glenn’s Ferry, ID, helps small generators of industrial wastewater prevent pollution and comply with environmental regulations. They do so by recycling contaminated water, a method less expensive than disposing of fugitive oil, solvents, gasoline, or other hydrocarbons.
An Oil Skimmer for Industrial Wastewater
A typical IRC recycling system for small generators like truck stops or construction equipment/agricultural machinery service shops includes a settling tank and an Abanaki Mighty Mini® oil skimmer. Other oil/water separation methods are effective, but are usually more expensive and less capable than an oil skimmer.
The 1” belt option can remove up to one gallon of oil per hour from the surface of the water, while a 2” belt can remove up to two or more gallons per hour.
The oil skimmer’s belt is operated by a motor and pulley system, which keeps it in motion whenever the unit is activated. Using the differences in specific gravity and surface tension between oil and water, the belt attracts oil, grease, and other hydrocarbons as it travels through wash water.
After the belt passes over the drive pulley, it travels through tandem wiper blades where the oil is scraped into a discharge channel. Next, the oil flows into a coolant-saving Abanaki Oil Concentrator®, where any residual water picked up with the oil is separated and sent back to the wash tank.
Water-free oil can then be discharged into a waste oil container to be hauled away and recycled. Alternatively, waste oil can be used as crude fuel, with the savings helping compensate for the cost of the equipment.
